What's With All The Rosemary In My Run? - Treats for Chickens

Hi Treats for Chickens community, it's me, Dawn!

Here is Part Two of Plants That Thrive + Survive in my Chicken Run. The focus plant is Rosemary.

I have rosemary planted in my run and the chickens have FULL access to it.

No pecking at it.

No curious picking either.

They leave it alone.

Every now and then someone will lay their rump right on top of a rosemary plant and I suppose if I weighed-in at less than 5 lbs - I would too.  I'd roll in it though. Get it all over.

This plant ALWAYS smells really, really good.  Better than good, actually. It's invigorating and relaxing + it's anti-bacterial and anti-fungal. You need some. Your chickens want some too.

Here's the deal: it grows like a weed.  It's green year around and when it blooms it's damn pretty.  No maintenance needed either. No. Maintenance.  I'm serious. The plants that are in my run and on our property have blue, purple and whitish-blue blooms. .

This was a little "Christmas" rosemary I bought at Lowe's during the holidays of 2015.

Here's what you can do with the rosemary to turn your every-day life into a unicorn-infused rainbow.

  • Snap a branch and add a sprig or two to nesting boxes along with our Nesting Box Blend. Fresh rosemary smells a million times better than dried.  That's why it's not included in my certified organic Nesting Box Blend recipe.
  • Snap a branch {oh heck, get wild and snap 5-6}, wrap rosemary around roosts with jute or twine. Red mites, lice and spiders will head for the hills while your flock will embrace the meditative aroma. You will too.  Smell your fingers.  Whoo-chow.
  • BBQ season means sunny skies, flip flops and outdoor dinners.  You can snap a branch and use it as a brush to apply bbq sauce and marinades to your meats and veggies.
  • Oh how I love an adult beverage.  A strong adult beverage.  But, I can't be "drinking" all day, you know.  But, I can add a snap of rosemary to any ole' damn drink {virgin or otherwise} and then it feels festive and aromatic and before you know it I'm feeling like I'm at a ski lodge in Vale, CO or boating The Nile in Egypt or swigging gin in Norway.  Or maybe I'm at work, reviewing the organic inspection logs and I'm about to loose my ever-loving-mind...and I snap a sprig of rosemary and add it to my San Peligrino or I stuff a small sprig into my water bottle. And, just like THAT.  I'm rejuvenated.  My sanity has returned. Try it.  You need this too.
